Youth Network Conduct Senatorial Forum As Part of Advocacy for Clean, Peaceful, and Responsive Elections

Rock the Vote Philippines, a networked composed of individuals and formations from the youth sector, partnered with BlogWatch, Wikipilipinas, and Torch Publications for a Senatorial Forum on February 22, 2013 at the Philippine Normal University, Taft Campus.

For the 2013 elections, Rock the Vote Philippines presents an avenue for the youth to proactively participate in the electoral process even before the day of the election. It aims to present opportunities to consolidate all efforts of various youth organizations, formations, alliances and networks to push for clean, responsive, and honest elections.

As part of Rock the Vote Philippines’ programs that push for informed and conscientious voting, Rock the Vote Goes to U: Campus Caravan was created to unite students, student organizations, publications, and councils in keeping a vigilant eye on the whole electoral process during this year’s mid-term elections. The caravan will be at different colleges and universities across the metro, from the month of February until April.

“We want our school to be part of the Rock the Vote network because we want to participate in the upcoming elections—not just during the election day itself. The vote of the youth is a potent factor in electing a candidate, we must not waste that. We also want the PNU student body to get to know the senatorial candidates and their platforms. The media and the internet are already feeding the youth with propaganda and traditional electioneering. We want to inculcate in the minds of the students of PNU that they must be critical about this and this senatorial forum is a very good venue for them to exercise their right to scrutinize and choose,” said Ethel Jordan, Associate Editor of the Torch Publication and Rock the Vote Coordinator for the Philippine Normal University.

Senatorial candidates must take part in this event as the delegation will consist primarily of first time voters.

“We want to push for a youth agenda that will encompass issues that are not only youth centered. We want to push for an agenda that will cover all of the peoples’ issues. The youth will challenge those running for office to answer to the Youth Agenda 2013 in terms of land, the provision of stable jobs and decent wages, education, human rights, and other social services. It is but right that the senatorial candidates prove themselves worthy of the vote of the youth. The youth’s role should not be confined to voting only. The youth should take part in educating other people on the correct voting process and correct choice of votes cast. The youth must be vigilant in terms of the integrity of the voting process. They should also secure that the candidates will remain true to the youth agenda once they are already in office,” said Einstein Recedes, convenor of Rock the Vote Philippines.

The PNU senatorial forum is only a series of Rock the Vote Philippines campus tours. For schedules and updates, visit www.facebook.com/RockTheVotePh or follow us on twitter @RockTheVotePH.
