How to help the victims of Tropical Storm Sendong (updated)

(Updated at 4:00 PM December 22) The official death toll from last week’s massive flash flooding in two Mindanao cities topped 1,000 on Wednesday as authorities said they lost count of how many more were missing in one of the worst calamities to hit the southern coastal region.

The latest tally showed a total of 1,002 have been confirmed dead, including 650 in Cagayan de Oro City and an additional 283 in nearby Iligan City, said Benito Ramos, head of the Civil Defense Office. The rest came from several other southern and central provinces.

4. Yakapin: Batang Hilagang Mindanao (YBHM)

My friend , Cathy and co-founder of my grief advocacy group has once again initiated “Stuffed toys campaign for the children.” Stuffed toys are effective comfort givers in times of stress and trauma. To children, stuffed animals are more than toys, they become the vehicles by which they are able to tell their stories and release their pain. Stuffed toys or teddy bears are able to provide some degree of comfort in a scary world.

Please help me bring hugs and comfort to the children of CDO and Iligan. If you have old or new bears or stuffed toys to give, kindly send me an email to [email protected] We have drop off points in Makati, Alabang and Quezon City. Check the list.

For stuffed toys please send clean, friendly looking toys (no pigs please, owing to cultural and religious sensitivities) in any size ideally, big enough for a child to hug.

For toiletry kits, each bag will contain the following items : toothbrush, tooth paste, soap, sanitary napkins (10 pcs), comb or brush, underwear (2 pcs) face towel, laundry soap — just the basics so the women can also take care of themselves as they take care of their children.
