What are you doing on Independence Day?
Amid the growing crisis of governance and the burning issues facing our nation, various groups call on all Filipinos to gather on June 12 and show our commitment to the fight for freedom, justice and democracy.
Ipaglaban ang Inang Bayan! Unity Statement says ” people face dire challenges, especially on issues of national sovereignty, social justice, human rights and democracy:”
- In the face of China’s incursions in the West Philippine Sea and growing presence of US troops on our soil, our leaders ignore calls to defend national sovereignty.
- In the wake of thousands of extra-judicial killings and similar atrocities, our leaders persist in trampling on our most basic human rights.
- As tens of millions wallow in poverty and want, our leaders impose heavier taxes while disregarding calls to increase wages and end labor contractualization.
- In the face of bare-faced corruption and tyrannical rule, our leaders have connived to undermine judicial independence and whatever is left of the system of checks and balances in government.
- And as if gender oppression were not enough, Filipino women now have to bear the brunt of misogyny from the highest officials of the land.
“We cannot sit quiet in the face of such an abusive government. With the spirit and will shown by our ancestors, our heroes let our voices ring this Independence Day for true love of country and fealty to democracy.”
Initial participating networks and organizations: Movement Against Tyranny, #BabaeAko, Voices of Women for Justice and Peace, Let’s Organize for Democracy and Integrity, Win for Freedom, Coalition Against Darkness and Dictatorship, Gabriela, Bagong Alyansang Makabayan, EDSA ProDem, EDSA 30,Lingap Bilanggo, Kalipunan ng Kilusang Masa, World March of Women, Pakisama-Kalipunan, Filipino Cultural Creatives, Alitaptap, Bantay Pilipinas, SOFA, DAMPI, Sangguniang Laiko ng Pilipinas.
#BabaeAko is basically a loosely organized multi-sectoral online campaign against the President’s misogynist and sexist attitudes, from women’s rights advocates and activists that started in late May, after the President said he did not want the succeeding Chief Justice to be a woman.
It was initially a campaign but it has morphed into a movement
It is also to call attention on Duterte’s attacks against institutions of Justice headed by women.
