@risahontiveros to Binay: Explain camp’s “a vote for Corona is a vote for Binay” statement

This is a press statement from Akbayan.

Akbayan National Spokesperson Risa Hontiveros today asked Vice President Jejomar Binay to explain his camp’s statement that a vote for the acquittal of impeached Chief Justice Renato Corona will bolster his chances in the 2016 elections.

Hontiveros made the statement after former Senator Ernesto Maceda, a leading member of Binay’s United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) revealed that the acquittal of Corona will strengthen the Vice President’s chances in the upcoming presidential elections.

“Is UNA through Maceda now saying that they will work for the acquittal of Corona? Is UNA now saying that it is willing to subvert justice and accountability in exchange for its 2016 political ambitions?” Hontiveros asked.

“If Maceda’s statement is the official party line of UNA, I think It just undermined the Vice President’s chances in the 2016 presidential elections. I hope Vice President Binay will explain his camp’s disturbing statement and state for the record where he and his electoral alliance stand on the Corona impeachment trial,” Hontiveros added.

Hontiveros said Corona’s conviction is non-negotiable. She said politicians and emerging political formations should refrain from using the people’s desire for justice as bargaining chips for their political aspirations.

“The people’s campaign against corruption is non-negotiable. The people’s desire to remove Corona is not up for bargain,” Hontiveros concluded.
