Social Media Day

Spearheaded by Mashable, Social Media Day is a global celebration held in dozens of cities and countries worldwide.

Flashback

In the Philippines, TweetUp Manila first held a Social Media Day celebration in 2012 at the Ayala Triangle, with around 500 participants from a cross-section of the country’s growing social media communities. It carried the theme “Social Media Capital.”

In 2013, TweetUp Manila staged a day-long Social Media Day at the New Glorietta Mall, themed “Let’s move #fwdPH,” close to a thousand gathered for its main program. Similar events were also held in several cities nationwide like Davao, Cebu, Bacolod, General Santos, Pangasinan and Cagayan de Oro.

This 2014, the stage is being set for a bigger Social Media Day celebration at The Fort, Taguig City.

TweetUp Manila is a community of netizens that organizes regular and periodic Twitter Meetups (TweetUps!) in Metro Manila for several years now.

Aside from the Social Media Day, it also spearheaded together with Rappler the first Philippine Social Good Summit (also a Mashable initiative) in 2012 at Greenbelt Theater and the Asian Institute of Management.

During and in the aftermath of devastating weather incidents Ondoy, Habagat and Yolanda, among others, TweetUpMNL promoted the use of the hashtags #ReliefPH and #RescuePH and of social media tools for resource and manpower mobilization, for assisting organizations involved in helping survivors, and for highlighting the need for better disaster response.

Social Media Day 2014: #boomPH

As in previous celebrations, this year’s Social Media Day hopes to be the biggest gathering of netizens in Manila and in select cities nationwide.

Carrying the theme “#boomPH” (Best of Online Media in the Philippines), Social Media Day 2014 would be a celebration of the boom in the internet, social media and digital industries in the Philippines, the opportunities that come with them, their positive impact on the lives of Filipinos, the promotion of prosperity for users and connectivity for all.

As 2014 marks the 20th anniversary of the Philippines’ first connection to the internet, Social Media Day 2014 will simultaneously pay tribute to the pioneers, remember milestones and give recognition to the digital natives who represent the future.

What to expect

Entrance is free for participants who sign up for tickets through Eventbrite.

Doors open 1:00 pm of June 28 for an exhibition featuring community initiatives and  TweetupMNL’s partners.

TweetUpMNL is reaching out to as many online communities to open Social Media Day 2014 to them, and have them take part in the celebration of the Philippines’ 20 years of internet use. Joining TweetUpMNL in making Social Media Day PH 2014 a success, through collaboration and cooperation, are: IGersManila, Soundcloud Philippines, Tumblr PH, Google Student Ambassadors PH, Google Education Group Makati, Windows Phone Users Group PH, Mozilla PH, PinoyExchange, Filipino Freethinkers, Hootsuite Ambassadors, Change.org PH, Sulit.ph, Menswear Syndicate, and BlogWatch, among others.

Communities will share interesting and fun talks and presentations starting at 3:00, while the main program kicks off at 5:00 pm — featuring music from 1994 onwards, a musical tribute to the 20th anniversary of the Philippines’ first link to the internet.

This year’s theme is #boomPH (Best of Online Media in the Ph): The digital natives are up and ready to rock the country and the world with their booming social media voices, awesome innovations, vibrant communities, and forward-looking outlook.

A red-carpet event would jumpstart the three-hour main program at 5:00 pm. Expected attendees are glitterati from the blogosphere, Twitter, celebrities and the various online communities. Select event partners would be invited to participate in the main program.

Social Media Day 2014 will also feature the first #boomPH, Best of Online Media Awards for social media excellence and outstanding work.

Other cities nationwide will be holding Social Media Day events and the Manila event will attempt to have a live Google Hangout with all of them. These events outside of Manila are being organized by online communities with close links to TweetUpMNL.

An after-event party is also being planned for guests, volunteers, staff and organizers.

TweetupMNL expects to gather close to a thousand participants, ages 18-40, students, young professionals, business owners and members of the digital industry. Social Media Day participants are typically active social media users.

TweetupMNL’s Social Media Day celebrations have consistently trended on Twitter for the past 2 years and have been covered by online and broadcast media before, during and after the event.

This year’s #smday celebration is set to be more vibrant and diverse as we involve various influential and socially-relevant communities and their members.
