Most netizens say NO to “Batangas” sign ala Hollywood on Taal Volcano

Vilma Santos just wanted to reclaim what belongs to Batangas. Put a “Batangas” sign on Taal Volcano.

“Our main goal is to reclaim Taal Lake and Volcano as part of Batangas,” she pointed out.

It is true that there is widespread misperception that Taal is part of Tagaytay, Cavite. “The best views of the lake and volcano can be seen from Tagaytay,” she conceded. “We wanted a landmark that will identify Taal as part of Batangas.”

Tagaytay City Mayor Abraham Tolentino maintained that the city had never laid claim to either the lake or the volcano. He questioned the Hollywood-inspired design for the island, flatly saying: “Why put up a Batangas sign? It won’t help.”

This plan did not augur well online. “For Pinoys online, however, the idea broached by the veteran actress was nothing but a joke and a colossal waste of time and money, if you will.

Other wisecracking netizens, however, found humor in the absurd, and started a meme that mimicked the Hollywood sign and placed it not only on other famous Philippine landmarks, but on just about anything. And when we say anything, we mean anything.”

A Facebook page called Hollywood Pilipinas started a meme explaining that “Governor Vilma Santos-Recto of Batangas wants to place a Hollywood-style sign on picturesque Taal Volcano. Why not just brand the whole country that way?”

This is one example:

Most netizens think this is not a good plan. One believes that “NO! better spend the money in cleaning the lake and getting rid of the illegal fish pens that are kiling the lake”
